Order Management System (OMS)
Definition
An Order Management System (OMS) is software that tracks orders from the moment they're placed to delivery: stock checks, payment, shipping and any returns. The OMS makes sure every department and system involved sees the same order status.
One view of every order
An order moves through several steps: approval, stock reservation, invoicing, shipping. An OMS links those steps together and keeps track of status, even when multiple systems are involved.
Difference from a web shop
A web shop displays products and processes orders. An OMS handles what happens next: which stock gets reserved, which warehouse ships it, and how the customer stays informed on status.
Practical example
A customer orders fifty units of a product split across two warehouses. The OMS automatically determines which warehouse ships from and updates stock in real time.
