E-invoicing
Definition
E-invoicing is the digital sending and receiving of invoices in a structured format that accounting systems can process automatically, unlike a PDF or paper invoice. In Belgium, e-invoicing via Peppol becomes mandatory for B2B transactions from 1 January 2026.
More than an invoice by email
A PDF invoice in an email is still something an employee has to read or retype manually. A structured e-invoice is read automatically by the recipient's accounting system, with no manual step.
The mandate from 2026
From 1 January 2026, Belgian companies must send e-invoices to each other via the Peppol network. Companies that don't risk a fine, and a harder process with customers who have already switched.
Connection to Peppol
Peppol is the network e-invoices travel across between companies. A web shop or ERP that's already Peppol-ready can adopt the legal requirement without major changes.
