Agentic commerce
Definition
Agentic commerce is a form of digital commerce where an AI agent independently searches for, compares and orders products on behalf of a buyer, without a human carrying out every step. For B2B procurement, this means a purchasing system may eventually order directly from suppliers whose data is machine-readable and reliable.
An AI agent as the buyer
Instead of an employee searching a web shop themselves, they give an instruction to an AI agent that searches, compares and possibly orders on their behalf, within preset limits.
What suppliers need for this
An AI agent doesn't read marketing language, but structured data: accurate prices, stock and specifications, ideally accessible via API or structured markup rather than only visual web pages.
Practical example
A procurement system is instructed to reorder 200 units of a part from the cheapest reliable supplier. The agent searches multiple supplier catalogs and places the order automatically, without a buyer stepping in.
