Definition
SaaS, or Software as a Service, is software delivered and used over the internet, without the customer having to install or maintain it themselves. The vendor manages hosting, updates and security; the customer typically pays a fixed amount per month.

Companies used to buy software that ran on their own servers and had to be maintained by an internal IT team. With SaaS, the software runs at the vendor, and you simply log in through a browser.
