Master Data Management (MDM)
Definition
Master Data Management (MDM) is the management of core data — such as product information, customer data or supplier data — so it stays consistent and accurate across every system. MDM prevents the same data from becoming contradictory or outdated across different systems.
One correct version of the truth
Without MDM, the same product name is sometimes spelled differently in the ERP, the web shop and the warehouse system. That leads to errors, confusion and extra work to correct data.
Difference from PIM
PIM (Product Information Management) specifically manages product data for sales. MDM is broader: it also covers customer, supplier and location data, keeping all that core data consistent everywhere.
Practical example
A manufacturer changes a product's item number. With proper MDM, that change automatically flows through to the ERP, the web shop and inventory management, instead of updating each system separately.
