B2B marketplace

Definition

A B2B marketplace is an online platform where multiple suppliers offer their products to business buyers, usually through one shared catalog with shared payment and logistics handling. This is different from a company's own web shop, where one business sells its own range.

Multiple suppliers, one platform

On a B2B marketplace, buyers find products from different suppliers side by side, similar to how Amazon or Bol.com work for consumers, but tailored to business purchasing, with customer-specific prices and larger order volumes.

Difference from your own B2B web shop

A company's own web shop sells only that company's range, with full control over brand, customer relationship and pricing. A marketplace shares that visibility with other suppliers, in exchange for wider reach.

Practical example

A manufacturer of industrial parts can run its own web shop for regular customers with negotiated prices, while also being present on a marketplace to reach new buyers.
